Green Hydrogen Certification for Export to EU

Topic: Green Hydrogen Certification for Export to EU

Time: 12.30 – 1.30 PM

Date: 4 July 2024

The European Union has set ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, with an intermediate target of a 55% reduction by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Central to this effort is the production and importation of green hydrogen, aiming for 10 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen produced within the EU and an additional 10 million tonnes imported by 2030.

India, through its National Green Hydrogen Mission, is actively pursuing the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors using green hydrogen. Additionally, India seeks to play a significant role in the global green hydrogen market, creating opportunities for exports to meet global demand. To align with EU regulations for exporting green hydrogen, which classify it as a ‘renewable fuel of non-biological origin’ (RFNBO), India must meet three certification conditions: additionality, temporal correlation, and geographic correlation.

This session will address these key regulations and explore how India can meet the certification standards to become a major exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives to the EU. Participants will gain insights into the certification process, the specific conditions set by the EU, and the strategic steps India can take to align with these requirements.
